Open 2024

Transformation

9 March - 5 May 2024

The theme of this year's Open exhibition is 'Transformation', and the work of almost a hundred different artists can be seen in the show, each of whom has responded to the theme in their own unique way. There are nightmarish scenes, peaceful landscapes, self portraits, sculptures, narrative work, abstract work, figurative work. The themes covered include the environment, personal development, dreams, nightmares, violence, war, life cycles, the beauty of nature and the flexibility of materials. There are no words that can describe the incredible variety and talent that is on display here, you have to come here and see!

In addition to the Open exhibition, a selection of Susan Williams-Ellis' work has been chosen to be displayed as part of the theme of Transformation. This is the first time some of these works have been exhibited publicly. Visit Transformation 2024 for more information.

Emerging Artist Award
The winner of this year's emerging artist award is Ali Pickard, for her two 3D pieces - 'The Word Gleaner' and 'Extinction'. We would like to congratulate her warmly, and we look forward to holding a fuller exhibition of her work in September 2025. The emerging artist wins £500 towards the cost of preparing an exhibition the following year.

The People's Prize
We are giving a prize of £500 to the artist who receives the most votes from visitors to the exhibition, so remember to vote for your favourite. The votes will be counted on the morning of the 19th of March, so you must vote before then.

Painting With Words
This year for the first time we have two resident poets who have been chosen to respond to some of the pieces in the open exhibition. Aled Jones-Williams will write poetry in Welsh, and Suzanne Iuppa in English. The two will hold ekphrastic poetry workshops as part of the 'Painting with Words' scheme with the support of Literature Wales, and readings of their work will be held before the end of the exhibition. Check the 'events' page for the dates of the workshops and readings.
